Bright Lights Or Dim Bulbs?

"You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."
Matthew 5:14 (NKJV)

There are different kinds of lights, and those lights all have different purposes.  A flashlight, table lamp, and Christmas lights are all considered lights, but they are all used in different ways.  A flashlight can help you find your way in the dark, a table lamp can help you see something better than you could have seen it without that light, and Christmas lights are mainly for decoration.  When these lights are functioning correctly, they can be a benefit to you, but if they are dim, or even burned out, they are of no use to you or anyone else.

While Jesus was here on the earth, He was the light of the world.  As the light of the world, Jesus helped people see and understand the truth, Jesus helped people to clearly see and understand who God is, and Jesus also made the people and situations around Him better.  Now we are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), and we are to represent Jesus, so we need to continue doing the work that Jesus started.  The world is in darkness, and they need the light of the Gospel to help them, and that light needs to shine through us.

In John 9:5, Jesus said that He was the light of the world.  But we know that after His resurrection, Jesus went back to heaven where He now sits at the right hand of God.  Today, as Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, we are the light of the world, and we are supposed to shine as lights in the world by holding onto, and holding out to others, the Word of life (Philippians 2:15-16).  We are a reflection of Jesus, and we certainly do not want to do anything that would dim our light.  We need to let our light shine brightly to help others see and understand God and His Word, and to be a positive influence in this world.
